Praised by France Musique as “a pianist with a palette of colors in his sound,” Chao Wang is a dynamic young pianist of international acclaim. A laureate of numerous international competitions including the Takamatsu International Piano Competition (Japan), Geneva International Music Competition (Switzerland), Épinal International Piano Competition (France), and the Normandy European Piano Competition, Wang has captivated audiences at major music festivals such as Festival de Livarot (France), Verbier Festival (Switzerland), Beethovenfest Bonn (Germany), and Klaviersommer Wesel (Germany).
Wang has performed as a soloist with prominent orchestras including the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra (Germany), Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lorraine (France), Takamatsu Symphony Orchestra (Japan), Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (China), and the Junior Symphony Orchestra of the Central Conservatory of Music (China). Recognized as one of the most active pianists of his generation in China, he has given hundreds of solo recitals in over 20 countries and regions, with appearances at major concert halls such as Beijing Concert Hall, Zhongshan Concert Hall, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Wuhan Qintai Concert Hall, Qingdao Grand Theatre, Changsha Concert Hall, Shenzhen Binhai Performance Center, and Tianjin Grand Theatre, among many others.
In 2006, his live performance DVD Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, recorded during the Takamatsu Symphony Orchestra’s 55th Anniversary concert, received widespread acclaim in Japan. The Shikoku Shimbun praised his performance as “a brilliant display of technical virtuosity, deeply expressive emotion, and warm timbre.” His debut solo album Liszt & Chopin, released in 2015 by German label Acousence, was featured as a top recommended recording by Highresaudio. In 2021, he released his first vinyl album Boulevard de Capucines, a collection of Impressionist piano works, marking the first and only vinyl album of this genre recorded by a Chinese pianist. In January 2025, the National Centre for the Performing Arts’ label NCPA Classics released his latest album Chao Wang: Beethoven Piano Sonatas.
A pianist with a distinct sense of style and public recognition, Wang has been featured in interviews and photo spreads by magazines such as Bazaar Men’s Style and Style, and has twice appeared on the cover of Beijing Youth Weekly. His crossover appearances include the Chinese premiere of Stars on Ice, the music reality show I Am a Singer-Songwriter(iQIYI), and Who’s Still Standing (Jiangsu TV). He served as music director for the Sino Group Global Floral Art Forum in 2018 and was invited as a celebrity guest for the Singapore International Piano Competition in 2020. He was named “Emerging Artist of the Year” by Weibo Culture Night in 2023 and “Young Musician of the Year” at the Xingyue Role Model Ceremony in 2024.
Wang began his piano studies at the Middle School of the Central Conservatory of Music under Professor Ai-Ping Jin. In 2008, he was admitted to the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, studying with Klaus Bässler, Michael Endres, and Fabio Bidini. Later, he continued his studies with renowned pianist Klaus Hellwig at the Universität der Künste Berlin, where he earned his prestigious Konzertexamen doctoral degree in 2017.
